Oakland is a wonderful place to visit all year round but especially during this 2021 warm weather season. With many of us fully vaccinated, and still donning our masks, we are ready to get out and to safely socialize again! In fact, everyone of us is more than eager to make up for those cancelled events, parties postponed, and for all that in-person shopping we missed last year. So here are a few recommendations.
Love to picnic outdoors? The time is right to organize family and friends and headto Oakland’s Schenley Park, Schenley Plaza, or other green spaces in and around the universities where there is plenty of lawn areas for relaxing and soaking up the sunshine. You can hike, grab a bike and do a number of other activities while you are there. If you are planning a wedding or simply need a fresh scene for your social media posts, Oakland has your next outdoor photo shoot, with a variety from medieval to modern architecture such as the beautiful Mary Schenley Memorial Fountain across from Schenley Plaza, the many gardens and fountains at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens or the Westinghouse Memorial Fountain in Schenley Park. Trip Advisor also touts an Oakland walking experience through Walk The Brug Tours. The rates are quite reasonable for adults and children. The walk starts and ends near Phipps Conservancy and touches on the history and architecture surrounding four Universities. You don’t have to be a tourist to appreciate the interesting facts you’ll learn. Also, while the Cathedral of Learning and its Nationality Rooms are closed, virtual tours can be arranged online.

Shopping anyone?
Let’s get out of our digs and support local retail in Oakland. A great place to start is our newest pop up shop Argyle Studio @ 3608 Forbes Avenue offering fun and unique merchandise and featuring many of the top local crafters and makers in the region.
Argyle functions like a boutique-size department store with fashion, home accessories, and beauty products. They also offer opportunities for vending, music and other activities. If you are looking for other gifts or a style option, check out Maggie and Stella’s Cards & Gifts, which offer clothing, handbags, jewelry and more. We love that the store is named in honor of sisters Margaret and Stella Stein who, in 1895, were the first women to enter the Western University of Pennsylvania – now the University of Pittsburgh- as full-time students. Ask, and the staff will happily tell you their story, and show you a photo display of the iconic pair. Next take a retail tour to the Irish Design Center, one of the only places in Pittsburgh specializing in fine quality knitwear, jewelry, and gifts from Ireland, Scotland & Other Celtic nations.
Traveling may have some to a near halt, but you can still look like you’ve been to the Emerald Isles. The next few months is also a good time to up your style game in eyewear by sporting a new pair of sunglasses along with your fashionable face masks. Check out the many eyewear galleries on several Oakland thoroughfares. You’ll find both designer and statement eyeglasses as well. Options include Medical Center Opticians, Eyetique, UPMC Eye Center Eye Care & Optical and Oakland Fashion Optical.
This is just a sampling of what we enjoy and do in Oakland – we encourage you to come out, rain or shine, (you never can tell with Pittsburgh weather) and spend a day enjoying all the Oakland community has to offer.
