Exploring the Poetry of Oakland: Local Voices Celebrate Our Community
Last summer, we collaborated with over a dozen businesses to introduce “Oakland Sidewalk Sweets,” as an expansion of our 2022 Sidewalk Poetry initiative. Throughout June and July, we engaged with more than 150 Oakland residents to discover what they find poetic about Oakland. Upon submitting their thoughts, we gave them an Oakland Sidewalk Sweets card, which they could use at participating businesses to enjoy a sample of a sweet treat from their menu. Among the responses we gathered, we found these to be particularly inspiring and we hope these sentiments resonate with you as well!
One resident described Oakland as a "patchwork quilt of cultures, stitched together by shared stories and flavors," which beautifully captures the diversity and unity within our community. Another individual shared that Oakland is like a "melting pot of dreams, where each person's journey adds a unique ingredient to the vibrant recipe of our city," highlighting the rich tapestry of aspirations and experiences that intertwine to create the Oakland we know and love.
These poetic reflections not only celebrate the essence of Oakland but also showcase the deep connection residents have with their city.
